About Alone in the Dark: Illumination

Don't have Alone in the Dark: Illumination?

Genre: Shooter | Publisher: Atari | Platform: PC
Developed by Pure FPS, Alone in the Dark: Illumination, breathes new life into an old video game series and marks the first time in the Alone in The Dark series where there’s an online co-op available. In Alone in The Dark 7, you play as one of four characters, each with unique skills and weapons, to fight through an environment full of gruesome monsters and rescue your missing friends.

Strategy: The Core Challenges of the New Alone in the Dark: Illumination

Alone in the Dark: Illumination is another entrant in the world of survival horror but this one has a lot of history to back it up. Here are a few things to know to help you be a success:

You have access to four characters in Alone in the Dark: Illumination. Each of these playable characters has unique weapons and skills that you should take the time to try out until you find the one you like to use. The Hunter has use of heavy weapons; The Witch uses small firearms and has very useful lightning strikes. The Priest has multiple “holy” abilities and The Engineer, while arguably the weakest of the four, has a more diverse weapons pallet and her Tesla Wall is incredibly useful.

The game’s namesake is an important ability in the game, as you can make safe zones by illuminating sections of the map and damage your enemies. This also includes lighting fire barrels, turning on security lights, and turning on main power sections to create safe zones.

Get as much ammo as you can early because getting overwhelmed happens quickly. And, remember, the light on your weapon only helps you from the front. While you’re fighting what you can see, what you can’t see is quietly sneaking up behind you.

4. Shut Gates and Doors
After you enter areas in Atari’s Alone In The Dark Illumination, be sure to close the doors or gates behind you, this will help prevent you from being completely overtaken.

What We Like About Alone in the Dark: Illumination

As with any genre game there are good and bad things. The survival horror genre in particular is saturated with title after title and series that have gone on forever. Alone in the Dark: Illumination is a legacy and should be played for that reason as well as the reasons listed below.

Fantastic Story
All of the Alone in the Dark games are based on the stories of H. P. Lovecraft. They are dark, poignant, and super weird. It is filled with monsters and beings that were copied by other games in the genre so it is fantastic to see them here in the environment that they were designed. There ae no rip-offs here, just honest gaming.

Cinematics and Graphics
The original Alone in the Dark was a point and click movement with simple graphics (it was on DOS so you can’t fault it much). As it aged it went through a metamorphosis and the new Alone in the Dark: Illumination puts the others to shame offering great graphics and creepy cinematics.

Multiplayer
Alone in the Dark: Illumination, unlike its predecessors, offers you the chance to play online with your friends. This allows you to utilize multiple characters to get through the many enemies you will come across in the town of Lorwich

Survival Horror at Its Best
What makes survival horror awesome? It’s the ability to overcome tremendous odds by killing evil creatures. Alone in the Dark: Illumination has that in spades. If you are a fan of games like Silent Hill or Resident Evil then you will love this as it surpasses them in creepiness.

Basic Gameplay of Alone in the Dark: Illumination

You can play as a single character or host/join a group play. The character you choose can be customized to some degree, but don’t expect a big bertha gun or something when you first start out. You’re going to investigate – that’s it. When you start the game you will be given a small snippet of the story. The rest you will unravel as you progress. Alone in the Dark: Illumination uses a standard first person shooter model where you play while looking over the shoulder of your main character. The rest, if you’re familiar with these types of games, will be easy to pick up. If not, you will be treated to a simple tutorial as you meander through the dark streets of Lorwich.

Things that you can interact with will show up in real time, boxed in white so you can easily see them. Getting to them is sometimes a problem, but that’s how the game gets you to move away from safety.

Top Questions of Alone in the Dark: Illumination

Do I have to have played the other Alone in the Dark games to follow this story?
No. Alone in The Dark Illumination can stand on its own. If you’re a fan of the other games that’s great but it doesn’t add any value to playing this one.

Is there a main character in Alone in The Dark 7?
While there are four characters you can play, each different and useful, there are effectively two main characters The Hunter, who is the direct descendant of the original character and The Witch, who is related to the original Alone in The Dark heroine.

How effective is the flashlight on the weapon?
Light hurts the baddies in Alone in the Dark: Illumination, but the flashlight on your weapon does very little other than light your way. Create safe zones using the lights in town because your flashlight will have no impact on them.
